Signing the pledge is more than just paying lip service to a set of ethics. It can have the effect of making the new generation of leaders accountable to a code of behavior that can change the way business is done.
Conduct a self-vetting
Every time there is a congressional hearing for a cabinet post or a court appointment, we see how rigorous the vetting is. Each corner of a candidate’s life is open to investigation. Did they pay their taxes? Did they declare their nannies? Did they pay their parking tickets? Did they accept business gifts? Did they make a careless comment about a sensitive issue? Did they get a special deal on a home or car purchase? Did they give a friend a job? Did they ever get fired? Did they pad their résumé? Did they ever have too much to drink? Did they ever lose their tempers and say something they shouldn’t have? Did a brother or sister or friend do anything embarrassing?
The scrutiny is brutal, and most of us can feel a sense of relief that we don’t have to undergo that level of examination in front of the world. But it is a worthwhile exercise to consider your own life and to measure your integrity. If you were to do a self-vetting, what would you find? Look in your closet and expose the skeletons. Make a list, for your eyes only. The focus should go beyond legalities, such as whether or not you paid your taxes. Consider, too, everyday ethics and behavior. We tend to put a lot of focus on the big issues, but the small moments can be the most revealing. For example, what would you say about a person who performs brilliantly in business, yet forwards a racist or sexist e-mail cartoon to friends? Or a coworker who takes credit for work that isn’t his or her own? We are all tested daily by life’s mundane challenges, and none of us is perfect. But if we can acknowledge our errors, we can also find ways of not repeating them.
